Of course, my most advanced "locksmithing" experience has been inadvertently "keying" a car I pushed off from 30 years ago as it ran me down--result of an inattentive driver momentarily going "off road" into pedestrian territory *heh*--so I don't have anything in my possession that I'd think of as a tool of the locksmithing trade. But, of course, should some bureaucrappic goon catch me in possession of a wire coat hanger in a parking lot (or perhaps even in my own driveway) somewhere I suppose such an evil being could interpret that as having criminal intent and possession of a "tool" that could be used to jimmy a lock...

*feh*

I'm going to google "locksmithing tools/courses" and add to my personal tool collection and general around-the-house handyman skillset (nothing approaching within a country mile of your professionalism!) before this idiocy spreads to America's Third World County.T. This secondary piece of legislation acts to criminalize an otherwise lawful expression of self interest by associating tools of the trade with criminal activity, as if they were one in the same. This has been a clever diversion in legislative wording for years because it works; those who claim to need such laws clearly abdicate self rule in favor of security by the Nanny State.

Thanks for stopping by MK.T. It has been my experience, at least here in Texas, that most individual locksmiths felt like they were pushed into being licensed out of fear for their livelihood. There are powerful political PACs which hold sway; one of them is the Alarm servicing industry which didn’t like the locksmith industry having any part of what they considered “their money”. The alarm lobby interests manufactured a “crisis”, at least it was a crisis in the minds of the locksmith industry leadership, to protect what little influence was to be had in the legislature by “going along” with the licensing mentality. This is all water under the bridge now as locksmith licensing took effect many years ago and has grown to be a monster, a monster which has taken over the free market and replaced it with nanny state dictates which have crushed the spirit of individual enterprise.

I had a fellow, much more educated than myself; explain the process which has taken place in ALOA, TLA and all the other trade/professional organizations. It actually has a name; a marked change from the organization being geared to sharing information, helping other members and building from within to a bureaucratic elitist run political machine which eventually destroys itself and the original foundations it was built upon; basically a microcosmic version of America’s “Great Experiment” on self rule. (wish I could remember the name of the process)

There are quite a few “leaders”, if you can call them that, who would prefer I remain silent, or better yet, just die quietly. I’ve been classified as a “boat rocker” and even a “nut job” as I prattle on about my disdain for the entire locksmith licensing fiasco. It has been put to me in various ways, “Why can’t you just figure out a way to get along? Your way of doing things isn’t helping the “overall cause of locksmiths” when working with DPS/PSB”.

It is one thing to “compromise” on small procedural issues; yet another to cave in on principles, licensing in most instances is basically wrong. It hands over powers to government which rightfully belong only in the hands of individuals on the false pretext of providing safety and security to the general public. I simply remind folks that our free market system is under attack; why should we help the enemy destroy it from within?

Thanks for chiming in.T. F.
