Classic Good vs Evil in 2009


Just wanted to jot down an observation as I start off what might be yet another very slow day as remnants of a Pacific hurricane which drifted across Mexico threaten rain for the next couple of days here in the Houston area. The “line in the sand” is ever present, the line where folks must side one way or the other on whether they are for or against; except some folks are always trying to blur the line.

I had a Sunday School teacher who had a line, “Last week’s lesson was on evil and we was against it”, except he put a hillbilly twang to “against it” contracting the words to “a-giun-it”. My apologies to Jed Clampit for abuse of a dialect unfamiliar to me. “This week’s lesson will be on Good and we’s for it.”

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a better understanding of that line in the sand? I left part of the following scripture reference on somebody’s comment section the other day; interesting how the topic has popped up all over the place.

“Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.

But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.

Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.” (Moroni 7:12-14)

Hope you paid attention to all that, particularly the warning not to confuse the source of either. I mention that as I relate a few of the items found recently.

Doug Mataconis over at Below the Beltway posted an article, Atheist Ads To Hit New York Subways . The brunt of the ads would have us believe “A million New Yorkers are good without God…Are You?”, as if good springs from some source other than God. Actually, if you read between the lines, the entire ad campaign is a direct assault on God; it might as well say, “We don’t need no stinkin’ God!”, a poorly done upgrade from an old Bogart movie.

Doug ended his article with a built in timer, waiting for the shoe to drop, “Expect the controversy to start in 3, 2, 1…………” Actually, that controversy started when Cain slew Able and has continued to this very day with ever increasing momentum.

One of the major stories in the Houston Chronicle today, “A welcome statistic: No Houston murders in 11 days”. When I clicked on the link it took me to the story, titled a bit differently, “This Crime Statistic is actually nice to hear” . Wow, a whole eleven days without a murder, maybe Houston will get an award, a gold star on our progress chart will make folks stand up and take notice; groan! “No Murder in Last 11 Days”, a sign posted in front of city hall similar to the safety boards posted outside of major industrial production facilities, “No job related injuries 245 days”; that should inspire folks to move here, yup, a real selling point.

MK at Down Under on the Right Side brushed against the topic, Western culture is Far Better than Islamic culture .

‘“Where Islam sets roots, freedom dies,” however that could just as easily be extended to include leftism as well. In fact both groups have a lot in common, a hatred of our obviously superior western culture, hatred of a real religion of peace, hatred of real free speech [evidenced below], hatred of real liberty, a fascination with tyranny and mass murderers, a care-free attitude to sex with small children, a common disconnect with reality and logic, a common tendency to blame anything and anyone else but themselves for the destruction caused by their respective morally bankrupt and disgusting ideologies.’

In case some of you missed the point, “the real religion of peace” is the one which has Jesus Christ as our Savior, the Son of God, Author of all that is good; just thought that needed to be brought into focus.

When some fool tries to sell you on a philosophy which varies from the most basic of truths, that good doesn’t come from God or any of the many rationalizations for failing to acknowledging God for every good thing, little red flags should go up in your mind. Our nation was founded on the principle that God is at the head of our government, an active participant to whom we acknowledge our freedoms and liberties.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Attempts to sidestep the Author of Liberty sets the stage for loss of individual liberties through the natural next step of assigning government as the author of rights. If it can ever be proposed and accepted that government is the source of individual rights it stands to reason that such rights are arbitrary and subject to forfeiture at the whims of those in power; entitlements rather than rights because under a government without God there are no God given rights.
I suppose I should thank Doug for reminding me, the classic struggle between Good and Evil is never ending and requires each individual to stand on one side of the line drawn in the sand.
